This opens the possibility that kĕ (usually translated “according to”) in Genesis 1:26 may also signify function rather than similitude (cf. Wis 14:17). Humankind, thus, is the image and is the likeness of God. The synonymous nature of ṣelem and dĕmût also supports this option. More persuasive than the grammatical evidence, perhaps, is the inner textual elaboration of what is meant by the image of God.
